Director’s Report

MARCHING BAND
• The maintenance crew mowed the field today. I am told that we can
expect that they will mow every two weeks. If we need it mowed on the
off weeks then we are responsible for that. Jill Kirby has a lead on
someone (Chad) who may volunteer his labor when needed. He will only
mow the part that we use. We will coordinate painting with mowing so
that we don’t waste paint ($40-$50 each).
• The educational representative from Brook Mays fouled up our drum
order. We have therefore given the ed. rep. from Music & Arts an
opportunity. He thought we would be able to get our drums by the end of
this week if we ordered Ludwig rather than Pearl. He found out that
Ludwig can not ship any sooner than Pearl so we will stick with Pearl to
match the other drums. I am waiting to hear from him an estimated
shipping date. He said roughly 2-4 weeks. Meanwhile we have borrowed
two snares from Green Hope. They need adaptors, so we’re waiting for
them. I am also waiting to hear from the BD at Broughton, who said he
may have a set of quints and a small bass drum to loan us. He is
checking today.
• Our first home football game is August 27th. We will not march in
uniform, but will dress in:
Marching band t-shirt (the new one should arrive in time)
Khaki shorts
Drill masters w/ black socks
• We have filled the hole in the drill with a transfer from Mississippi,
Courtney Smith. She is learning baritone for us to replace Richalle
Smith (injury) who will play in the pit.
• We have caught up with our drill and music and await the closer. Of
course we still need to clean mvt I and II, but I am pressing Brian &
Brian for the final movement.

GENERAL
• I haven’t heard anything regarding keys despite several attempts. I’m
done asking. Drew will look into this. A suggestion was made by Susan
to go directly to Mr. McNeill.
• I distributed the classroom student information sheets today and asked
for them to be returned tomorrow. Of course I will continue to collect
them next week.
• Spring trip – Mark Camphouse (world renowned composer) has expressed
interest in hosting us at his school, Radford University the weekend
before spring break (March 18-20). He will get back with me to confirm
that facilities are indeed available.
o We would leave Friday am and miss 1 school day. Travel to Radford,
VA. Maybe some time with the composer that afternoon/evening. If not
with the composer Friday then with him Saturday am.
o Saturday – Many of the kids said they’d love to go whitewater rafting
or to King’s Dominion.
o Sunday – Leave for home by early afternoon. Back home evening.
• Plans are tentative. Once Mr. Camphouse confirms then I will submit a
trip request. Members of WE and SB are eligible, but not required.

Treasurer’s Report:

There is an outstanding balance on our repair budget. Wake County has
not paid a repair bill from Brooks Mays. It has been approved. Mr.
Hunter is waiting to hear from them.

Fair Share

Everything is up to date and everyone is up to date on payments. There
is one outstanding payment from student who joined late, with payment
deadline arranged with the family.

The mailing of statements and fund raising letter will be combined and
go out the middle of Sept..
A suggestion was made to have a cost estimate of the spring trip to be
included in the fund raising letter.

Ways and Means

The fruit sale starts Sept. 7. Debbie will come in to the classrooms
that day to tell the students about the fruit sale. We are raising
prices slightly this year. The only change is the order forms this year
– they are one form instead of individual forms.

Wrapping paper fund raiser will start at the earliest Sept. 14 or 15
with due date of October 1. Students will make 50% profit.

Misc.

Chip reports that there are 137 email addresses signed up for the band
yahoo group and 88 signed up for the marching band website. He
clarified that it is 88 email addresses, with the same family possibly
having several addresses signed up.

New Business

We received an offer from Cary Band to advertise in their Cary Band Days
program. They gave a suggestion to place an ad to congratulate seniors.
Cost is $60 for ¼ page; $100 for ½ page; and $175 for full page.
Deadline is 9/30/04. The Publicity Committee will draft a ¼ page ad and
the board will vote. Barb made a suggestion to have the senior parents
pay instead of the boosters.

Chip received a call from the Debate Club. They are taking the
initiative to approach corporations for donations. They learned they
will need to set up a non-profit organization. 2 different school
groups suggested they contact the band boosters for help. Chip referred
them to Mike Johnson.

Marching Band

Registration and deposits have already been sent in for all 4
competitions. We were first to get our money in so we have first choice
for position, which is last in our class.

Truck has already been reserved for all competitions, the Veteran’s Day
Parade and the Christmas Parade.

Barb asked about food for Camp Part 2 and competitions. Last year we
had money left over because of the cancelled Croatan trip. This year,
there may be no money left over from camp to use for this purpose. Chip
suggested the group ask the question again, closer to the desired event.

Jill asked about having a group photo submitted to the yearbook. Nancy
Molin said her daughter has a friend on the yearbook committee who could
possibly help us. Also, Jill will get in touch with Mrs. Branciforti,
the yearbook advisor to find out what we need to do to get our pictures
submitted.

Drew reported that our total earnings from the car wash were $1311. -
$930 from pre-sales and $381 to be split between all the students who
participated.

Nancy Molin made a motion to adjourn. Drew seconded. Meeting was
adjourned at 8:35 pm.

Next Band Booster Meeting is Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 7:00 pm in
the Band Room.
