The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President, Mary Ann Williams.
- Minutes of the January, 2010 meeting – The minutes of the January 2010 meeting were reviewed. A motion to approve minutes was made by Rhonda Connor, seconded by Brent Carter.
- Band Director’s Report – Mary Ann Williams for Robert Hunter
- Mr. Hunter is at UNCG accompanying 13 students selected for the UNCG Honors Bands. While students are rehearsing with some of the country’s finest conductors, Mr. Hunter is attending workshop sessions. The 11th and 12th graders are under the baton of Gary Green.
- All-State Honors Band auditions will be held on the first Saturday in March. Please wish Matt Hugo, Mike Hopkins and Matt Springfield well!
- The band classes are preparing for concert festival which is scheduled for March 26th.
- Another color guard instructor was interviewed recently. He works with a few other guards as well, but lives nearby which would be very convenient. He remembers what the Enloe guard was 15 years ago and hopes to restore it. Plans also include coming to the school to recruit during lunch and he hopes to have a couple of open sessions for interested students (even band kids) to come out and try spinning and tossing for the fun of it.
- Danny Schmitt was selected as our Drum Major for next season! His duties have already begun. Mr. Hunter will be meeting with him soon to select other officers.
- The next band concert “Informance” is scheduled for Thursday, March 11 at 7:00 pm.
- Treasurer’s Report – Jay Johnson
- Sent out via Yahoo Groups on February 9.
- Monthly checking statements reviewed by Greg Turner.
- The Rita Goodman Scholarship fund awards $250.00 to a graduating senior, which is donated by relatives of Rita Goodman. A scholarship selection committee, as stated in the bylaws, includes the President, Band Director and other club member as necessary. Helen Bishop served on this committee in the past.
- Operations Report – Mary Grant
- Looking forward to May activities - beginning to organize for these events.
- Ways and Means – Brent Carter
- Spring car wash date has not set. Brent will be in touch with the McDonalds location to get a date established. He will put out an email with the date as soon as it is available.
- Would like to see two large fundraisers in the spring, one being the car wash.
- A brochure was presented on Yankee Candle fundraising opportunities. This is something to consider and has not been used in this area that we know of.
- Durham Bulls Update – Dan Johnson has been working with the Durham Bulls to establish dates for the upcoming season. The stand that we have staffed in the past, First Base Hits, has been contracted out for the entire season by Athens Drive. Tammy at the Bulls recognizes Enloe’s past commitment and is working to get us into the Flip Side Grill. Although she has not replied to emails this week to confirm, it is hoped that we will get 20 – 22 dates requiring 12 slots on each date; 6 adults and 6 students. Dan will keep us informed.
- Old Business:
- By-Laws Review - A committee of three, Lorraine Johnson, Wyatt Brannan and Susan Gymburch, was formed to review the Enloe Band Booster By-Laws which were last revised in April, 2006. Details of the proposed changes were sent out to the general membership for comment prior to the meeting. Utilizing two other booster by-laws and guidelines from the PTA, the committee presented proposed changes to the existing by-laws. Additional review and discussion took place at the meeting. All suggestions were noted and will be communicated to the general membership in the near future. The committee requests and welcomes any comments on the revised items. Newly proposed changes will be presented and approved at a later band booster meeting. Great job Lorraine, and committee members. Thank you for your time in reviewing and proposing changes to keep our by-laws up to date.
- Nominating Committee - Rhonda Connor agreed to chair the nominating committee.
- New band family information will be presented on May 13th, at 6:00 pm with the May booster meeting to follow at 7:00 p.m. A panel of 4-5 people will be available to present information on band camp, uniforms, volunteer opportunities, general information, etc. Parents will then be invited to stay for the board meeting.
- Enloe website link - Mr. Rice will follow up to establish a link from the Enloe website to the band website.
- Fair Share / General Fund
Discussion on fair share took place. Currently there are four main fair share fundraisers: fruit, Citipass, Durham Bulls and grocery cards. The contingent $50.00 payment toward fair share worked out well. It was suggested that any additional structured fundraisers go to general fund. General fundraisers, in the past, have not provided many volunteers. A committee, led by Jay Johnson, will prepare a written proposal of fair share options to be presented at a future meeting.
- New Business:
- Letter from parent regarding drumline expense
An email was received by all board members from Susan Evans, parent. Ms. Evans could not attend the meeting however, asked that her request be presented and resolved. Mrs. Evans feels that she should not be required to purchase drumsticks and mallets for her marching band student. She requests that money for this be taken from a fair share account. Under the guidelines, funds cannot be dispersed for individual expenses from the fair share account. Discussions from the general membership present at the meeting indicated that all band members have personal instrument expenses relative to their individually owned instruments, reeds, etc. Marching band drummers are provided with a drum, two drumheads, and harnesses which are band owned equipment. Drumsticks are deemed a personal expense. The drumsticks are used individually, by each student, and are not considered band equipment.
The option we have as a band organization is to add a line item to our budget to buy sticks for the drummers. There are currently 10 drumline members, at a cost of $25.00 per drummer, totaling $250. A motion was made by David Hockenberger, seconded by Brent Carter, to approve a line item on the upcoming budget, in the amount of $250, to pay for 10 sets of marching band drumline sticks out of the general fund. A vote was held with 18 opposed, no one in favor, 1 abstained.
- Website link – David Hockenberger plans to add a link to the Treasurer Reports on the band website.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p.m.
