II.         Band Director’s Report

Mr. Hunter reports the marching band competitive season has come to a close.  It was a very productive season, with all elements coming around to improve with each competition performance.  The MB has a few weeks off and then return to rehearse for the middle school tour and Cary Christmas Parade.  The middle school tour will include performances beginning at 7:30 am at Ligon, then on to Martin and awaiting final word from Carnage.  Every student will ride the bus to each location and lunch, with no students driving themselves.

UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble was grateful for the opportunity to perform here and enjoyed our opening and the commissioned piece we played. They were amazed that, as a high school, we have been able to commission five composers since beginning this program in 2001.

The upcoming holiday concert on December 18 will feature small groups from the Symphonic Band again this year and the full Wind Ensemble.

Leadership training, initially scheduled for late April, will be held next week.  Mr. Hunter shared information on his decision to put next year’s leadership in place earlier this year.  Following the leadership training, a drum major for next year will be chosen and announced at the end of season banquet.  While still fresh from the season, Mr. Hunter will work with the new drum major in the selection of captains.  They will then be included in the naming of section leaders.  Auditioning for leadership is not the only criteria for selection; it is what students do each and every day that counts.   Training for all students interested is scheduled for next week, Tuesday and Thursday November 18th and 20th after school.  Having the leadership team in place early will provide a great opportunity for student involvement in the show ideas and planning.  It will also allow for preparation and communications by each section prior to summer break for the upcoming season. This should get us off to a great start when MB season and camp begins in August!

III.       Treasurer’s Report – The budget status report was distributed and explained by Jay Johnson.  He recommends continuing on original budget with slight overspending which will be made up over time.  It is anticipated that general funds will increase with new fundraisers proposed for the second half of the school year, continued breakfast sales, and contributions from employers such as GSK and others on behalf of volunteers. The funds generated for the remainder of the year should be more than enough to make up the slight shortages in budget.  After review and discussion, a motion was made to continue on with the original budget. Motion for approval was made by MaryAnn Williams, seconded by Jim Connor, unanimously approved by membership.

IV.       Fair Share – Wendy Daly summarized her recent efforts in collection of fair share final payments.  Although the final payment was due on November 2, balances still remain for 15 marching band and 3 guard members.  E-mail reminders were sent to each of these families. She will continue to monitor and report to administration for collection by graduation.

V.        Operations Report – Beverly Hockenberger

Beverly reports that it has been a great season and thanks all chairpersons and committee members for all of their assistance and support.

It was suggested that dates be provided to incoming middle school students for band camp dates prior to families scheduling summer vacations.  Mr. Hunter agreed to include this in the information provided to middle school band directors and students.

VI.       Ways and Means – Jim Connor

Fruit delivery is scheduled for Saturday, December 6 at 7 a.m.   All fruit sale participants should arrive at that time to pick up their orders.

For the very first time, Enloe Band Boosters have an opportunity for company sponsors to support the Enloe Bands!  If you know of any company or small business that is interested in sponsoring our non-profit group, please give Jim the contact information and he will be in touch with them.

Jim shared details of his goal to add new fundraising opportunities to increase general funds and diversify the type of activities to include the entire Enloe community.  The committee has narrowed the list down to six new proposals which include EBB Pencil Sale, Bleacher Buddies, Electronic Recycling, Autobell Car Washes, DigiLabs Photo Gifts, and Dinners Out. Discussion took place regarding each of the programs. Details on all six items can be found in the Ways and Means Report distributed via EBB Yahoo Group on November 11th.  A motion was made by Jim Connor to authorize the process of taking on these six selections, seconded by Jay Johnson and approved by all membership.

Look for info coming soon on two of the programs in time for holiday gift giving! ~ Autobell Car Washes and DigiLabs Enloe Band Photo Gifts.

Thank you to the following committee members for taking the time to put together and chair these programs for our general fund!  Tom Best, Jim Connor, Susan Gymburch, Tom Norton, Quentin Parker and Mary Still.

  • Old Business
  • Request for administration approval of Breakfast Bonanza sign was discontinued.
  • Wind Ensemble Spring Trip:  Plans are underway for the Wind Ensemble Spring break trip tentatively scheduled for April 3 – 6 ~ save the dates!  Mr. Hunter is in the process of arranging a host composer and hopes to have more information to share next month.  Please note this is the first weekend of spring break and possibly Monday – not entire spring break.
  • Foster’s Sponsorship offer will be handled by Jim Connor.

  • New Business:
    • The marching band end of season banquet, scheduled for December 13th, is being organized by Mary Still and JoyceAnne Porter.  Following the Cary Christmas Parade, a dinner will be catered in the cafeteria by Cooper’s Barbeque with a vegetarian lasagna option available.  Dessert donations will be requested for this event.  All dinners must be pre-ordered.  Meals will not be available for purchase on the day of the banquet.  Stickers or wristbands will be distributed to those who have pre-ordered meals.  Look for order details coming soon and be sure to RSVP by the date indicated.    The parade is scheduled to begin at 2:00 and the banquet will begin approximately 5 p.m. in the Enloe cafeteria.

    • Marching band camp dates have been set for August 1 – 8, 2009 to be held at Frostburg State University!  Rhonda Connor has provided the bus company with the dates, but a contract has not been signed.  She is requesting approval to sign a contract with them if the price is confirmed at $3,600 each way.  (Last year’s transportation expense was $4,200 each way.)  She continues to monitor gas prices and would like to have approval now to sign a contract for $3,600, each way, if this can be arranged. A motion was made to approve by David Hockenberger, seconded by Greg Turner, unanimously approved.

    • Mr. Hunter brings up concern of allotted time for the spring awards night scheduled for May 30.  This evening, in the past, consisted of a banquet, awards, senior awards, concert, and alumni concert.  In order to allow enough time for performances, he would like to propose not including a banquet. This will be discussed at future meetings.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:02 p.m. by David Still.

Next meeting date:  Thursday, December 11, 2008, 7 p.m. - Band Room
