- Minutes of the September, 2009 meeting – The minutes of the September, 2009 meeting were reviewed. A motion to approve minutes as written was made by Rhonda Connor, seconded by Brent Carter.
- Band Director’s Report – Robert Hunter
- Wind Informance was quite successful. Mr. Hunter plans to continue this early school year performance in the future. Woodwind and brass doing fantastic, moving along at a fast pace. Jazz improv group is in performance mode with three combos.
- Mr. Hunter has been encouraging fundraising and reminding students this year more than any other in the hopes that this has been beneficial.
- Marching band is having one of the best seasons in many years! This is the third year of separate woodwind and brass classes and he can see an amazing difference. Looking into a few options for color guard next year.
- Mr. Hunter shared information about a marching band incident and letter that was sent to him and Dr. Cochran. He spoke to all students recently about pride, representing Enloe, representing band and themselves. A letter was received expressing concern about the behavior of a few Enloe students at the Wakefield competition. It was noted that chaperones are doing their job and are not required to sit with the kids. Students are responsible for their own actions and it is a privilege to attend competitions. To address the situation, leadership has been sent an email requesting they be proactive in regards to behavior and be sure that all students know the rules and are representing Enloe with pride. Mr. Hunter did not personally observe this behavior himself, therefore, he requested all marching band participants to list on a card students they had seen demonstrating behavior problems. The cards were turned in personally to him. Students whose names were listed four times or more had a letter sent home to their parents. These 12 students will sit separately from the group with a chaperone or Mr. Hunter at the next competition. Although the situation is over, Mr. Hunter is taking precautions communicating with leadership to ensure that this will not happen again.
- The North Carolina Music Educators Conference will be held on November 8, 9, and 10. Mr. Hunter thought it would be helpful for one band parent to attend this event. Various vendors offer demonstrations and materials of interest to band booster organizations. In order to attend the convention, you must be a member of the organization. It was noted that Ramona Jenner, Mr. Rice, and possibly Helen Bishop would be attending in a professional capacity and would be willing to pick up informational material for us.
Treasurer’s Report – Jay Johnson
- A detailed report was sent via Yahoo Groups on October 8. We have gotten through this season’s usual balance low points well. Citipass and fruit order money has been deposited, though we have not paid for either yet.
- A band student’s brother won the 50/50 raffle at Panther Creek and donated the money to Enloe band! A big thank you to Gaurav Gupta for his generous donation!
- Fair Share – Wendy Daly
- Numbers have been received for the fruit and Citipass fundraisers. Wendy plans to get fair share earnings out within the next week.
- A few outstanding fair share payments remain. Emails will be sent to those who are behind.
- Next fair share payment, in the amount of $200, will be due on November 2.
- Wendy was commended by Jim Connor for keeping up on the outstanding payments. This seems to be the most current we have been for many years. Thanks Wendy for your efforts!
- Operations Report – Mary Grant
- Preparing for upcoming games and competitions.
- Ways and Means – Brent Carter
- Some Citipass books are still outstanding. Prompt payment or return of books is necessary. Brent will follow up with those families that have not paid for these books. If this pertains to your family, please be sure to take care of this matter with Brent as soon as possible.
- Holiday tree sale location was confirmed for the old Circuit City lot near Crabtree on Saturday, December 5. Insurance needs were discussed and Gregg Turner has agreed to help with obtaining the necessary insurance. We need of a coordinator for this one day event. Please contact Brent to help make this a success for the band program.
- Alumni families who are in the habit of using grocery cards can continue to purchase cards to benefit Enloe’s general fund. Please remind those you know to continue to purchase or to get a new card if they use a rechargeable card.
- Donuts continue to do well with approximately $100. profit each week! If you have an hour or so on Friday mornings, a few more volunteers are needed. Please contact Barbara Lee at barblee1@yahoo.com.
- A recycling program for ink cartridges was presented by Joanne Schmitt. A local internet-based company called Dazz-Cycle will be used. Returned cartridges generate funds that are paid directly to the band within two weeks of submission. The owner agreed to credit us an additional $10 for each batch we deliver directly since it eliminates his shipping costs. This will be an ongoing program and it is hoped that we can collect and submit on a monthly basis (30 cartridge minimum). The company accepts only original manufacturer’s ink cartridges. They do not accept previously refilled, store brand cartridges. A container has been placed in the band room and Mr. Rice offered to place a second collection container in the office or copy room at Enloe. Information and details of this program will be sent out via Yahoo Groups. Please start saving inkjet and laser printer cartridges and solicit relatives, colleagues, and businesses you know of for their used cartridges as well. These can be dropped off by students or parents in the band room anytime.
- Old Business:
- Jim Connor is still accepting photos of Enloe alumni in performance attire from their various colleges. Please spread the word and encourage alumni to send their photos to him at j_h_connor@yahoo.com.
- The video camera approved at the previous meeting has not been purchased. Mr. Hunter will be looking this weekend since there is nothing scheduled with band! Many thanks to Brent Carter, for donating a tripod for use with the video camera!
- New Business:
- End of Season Marching Band Banquet and Awards
Beverly Hockenberger is looking into having a catered banquet this year at a reasonable cost, instead of a pot luck. This will be held after the Raleigh Christmas parade at Enloe on November 21.
Mary Ann Williams presented a report on awards for Jennifer Norton. Student award nomination forms will be distributed and collected during the next competition. Students will be given the opportunity to vote and leadership will coordinate this. Winners will be recognized at the banquet. Various other service awards, letters, ribbons, and pins are given in recognition of years marching. It was suggested that a standardized award program be established and explained to the students at the banquet. There are many different categories that have been recognized in the past and it is hoped that documentation and explanation of specific awards, along with inventory, replacement and ordering information can be maintained from year to year. Mary Ann requests that anyone who has information on awards, etc. please share with her as soon as possible.
The McGoogan family has volunteered to coordinate this year’s senior slide show for the banquet. Many thanks!
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
