Enloe Band Booster Minutes – September, 2008
Meeting date: September 18, 2008
Location: Enloe High School
Attendees: David Still, Robert Hunter, Jim Connor, Jay Johnson, Drew and Sara-Morrison Rowe, Matt Rice, Wendy Daly, Kaye Poole, David and Beverly Hockenberger, Mary Still, Joanne Schmitt
Meeting called to order at 7:00 p. m. by President, David Still.
- Minutes of the August 14, 2008 meeting – A motion was made by Jim Connor and seconded by Drew Morrison-Rowe to approve the minutes as written.
It was noted that any changes or additions needed to the minutes should be sent to David Still or Joanne Schmitt prior to the next meeting.
II. Band Director’s Report – Mr. Hunter reports that the final page to the show was set today! The band has completed the whole drill on the field. Good sectionals have helped to make use of forced indoor time due to rain on Tuesday. The band is ahead musically, behind a little on drill.
The Panther Creek High School Competition schedule has been posted on the band room door. Student arrival to Enloe will be at 9:00 a.m. for the day. The competition performance is scheduled for 6:22 p.m. Additional details and the entire day’s schedule can be found on the itinerary posted. The day will include practice, a meal, and the student spirit bead ceremony. This is an Enloe tradition handed down from class to class, for students only, which includes the presentation of symbolic beads. This is a very special ceremony which takes place each year prior to the first competition.
During the week of October 13th, Drew Fennell, guest composer, will spend three days working with all of the band classes at Enloe. On Wednesday October 15th at 7:00 pm., the Wind Ensemble will perform two to three pieces.
Each year we participate in the Raleigh Veteran’s Day Parade with a performance following the parade on the lawn of the capitol building. This year we will perform a moving and beautiful patriotic piece. Donations taken at the Veteran’s Day benefit concert fund this commissioning project every other year.
UNC-Charlotte Wind Ensemble will be touring high schools in Wake County. An opportunity arose recently to perform a concert with them on Wednesday, November 12th at 7pm. Since this was not listed on the original band calendar, please let Mr. Hunter know asap if your student has any conflicts and cannot participate.
Discussion took place regarding the spring trip for Wind Ensemble which Mr. Hunter is strongly considering. A trip to Boston would be held the first weekend of spring break for two or three nights. Band booster assistance will be necessary to coordinate, however each student will be responsible for their own trip expenses. The tentative plan is to leave after school by bus on Friday, April 3 and return on Sunday or Monday, April 5th or 6th.
III. Treasurer’s Report presented by Jay Johnson – To alleviate duplication of information that was already distributed, please see the Treasurer’s Report posted to the Enloe Band Boosters Yahoo Group on Tuesday, September 16.*
IV. Fair Share – Wendy Daly reports that late reminders were sent to seven band and 2 guard members. Reminder has been sent out to all members noting due date of September 28 and final payment on November 2. By November, Wendy hopes to report earnings broken out by each category. Mr. Hunter requested a list of delinquent members and Mr. Rice requested last year’s delinquent members so that this can be reported to administration and noted for collection prior to students graduating from Enloe.
V. Operations Report – Beverly Hockenberger reported on the status of volunteers for Friday football afternoons between 2:30 and 5:00 pm while students remain on campus. Discussions took place with Mr. Hunter and Mr. Rice to clarify the number of parent volunteer needed and their responsibilities. Students are outside and around campus with admittance privileges to the building to get a drink or use the restroom. They are not permitted to roam the building. Three volunteers and three instructors are in place to monitor areas used by students around campus and one parent is stationed at the entrance doors in case they are needed for any reason. There is always someone available for students to come to. Encourage your student to stay here and utilize this supervision on football Friday afternoons. Everyone in attendance agreed that this opportunity is extremely convenient for all parents who find it difficult to transport students here early for football games on a Friday afternoon from all areas of the county. Volunteers are appreciated by all parents and Mr. Hunter! The extended rehearsal on the October early release date, October 16, will have lunch provided for students and volunteers will be in place for this extra rehearsal.
Middle School night is scheduled for October 24. This is a great opportunity for the boosters to reach out to incoming middle school parents. Mr. Hunter will include parent information when he sends the letter to Ligon, Martin and Carnage. It was suggested that an area be set up just off the field or behind bleachers for existing parents to “meet and greet” middle school parents whose students are here for the evening. This will provide an opportunity to answer questions and share our wonderful band experiences with them!
VI. Ways and Means – Jim Connor. Jim has put together a large list of ideas and suggestions which would benefit our organization tremendously. He is looking for a few parents to evaluate and narrow down these ideas to determine what would be most beneficial and of interest to the group. Volunteers are greatly appreciated for this endeavor which benefits all of our band students. Please contact him directly to assist with this. Fruit and Citipass book sales end next week. Please see the complete Ways and Means Report on the Enloe Group Yahoo posting of Monday, September 15th for all details.*
- Old Business: Breakfast Bonanza advertising sign - Mr. Rice agreed to look into obtaining approval prior to purchase. Cary Band Day Program Ad – Sara Morrison-Rowe indicated that the cost for the ad would be $65.00. A motion to approve was made by David Hockenberger, seconded by Drew Morrison-Rowe, and by unanimous vote approved. Mr. Hunter suggested that we add this as a line item to our budget since we do advertise in this program annually.
- New Business:
Mary Still indicated that Foster’s Body Shop is interested in advertising and a sponsorship of the Enloe Marching Band! Other than concert programs, we do not own any venue or property that could be used to display advertising. Ideas and suggestions were discussed including the possibility of obtaining sponsorships to provide enough funds to purchase a trailer to transport our equipment for next year. We could place sponsorships on the trailer for permanent advertising with a yearly advertising fee. Mary will try to find out the amount that Foster’s is willing to donate. Another suggestion was made by Jim Connor to contact the Enloe Athletic Boosters for ad placements with a percentage split (possibly 75% EBB/25% EAB).
A motion was made by Jay Johnson to adjourn the meeting, seconded by David Still. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
Next meeting date is scheduled for Thursday, October 9th at 7:00 pm.
